BBC – Back to Base-ics, Tales of a Master Baser

October 17, 2010

So i cracked on with my bases, and only just managed to get them completed. Now i decided coming into this project that because this was going to be one of my new demoing battleboxes i would a) Paint them in the standard colours and b) not go OTT on the basing. This meant i got to ply my trade at doing some pretty basic bases, which i haven’t done in a long time. so my tools of the trade that i used:

GW sand
GW Gravel (not sure if they still do this)
PVA glue
Super glue
GW Scorched Grass flock
GW Burnt Grass flock

I unfortunately managed to lose all my pictures of me making the bases, but the process was simple:

Super glue and glue down some gravel in patches
Water down pva all over the base and dip in sand
PVA in splodges on the base and glue down some more gravel
Seal the whole lot with Watered down PVA

the painting side of it i managed to capture however, with some decidedly dodgy photos!

a basecoat of Umbral Umber, or GW Scorched Brown

a second coat of Thornwood green, or GW Charadon Granite

a light coat of Bootstrap Brown, or Calthan Brown GW

a very light drybrushing of Khemri brown

Paint the rocks, i did greatcoat grey, codex grey, fortress grey. the greatcoat grey could be missed out.

I mixed scorched grass and burnt grass together to create a darker flock, and applied with super glue.

Painted edges, i like to call this 'Rimming'

Next update Tuesday: WIP Sorscha!

Better to burn out than fade away…

June 20, 2010

So, it’s been a while since I posted last, and I can hear you all screaming “what the hell have you been doing Jase?!?”

Well I’ll tell you. First off let me say that after the nationals I suffered from a massive burnout. Not with playing, I still wanted to play, but with painting big style. I played a game with my Retribution at the LGS and it got me back into wanting to play them (especially because I wanted to win the league with them) I also managed to arrange a 100 point game.

Now one of the things that always bugs me about my Bution is that the majority of them are just undercoated black, this is for 2 main reasons
1: White is a pain in the arse to paint
2: I hate painting masses of infantry, which is pretty much all my Bution is.

However when I made my list for my 100 pt game I wanted to make sure that my 2 casters I was going to use would be painted, that way I wouldn’t lose them in the masses of infantry.

So I sat down with my iPod and paints, and broke out the 2 casters I needed to paint: Kaelyssa and Ravyn.

These took me roughly 2 nights to complete, let’s say about 12 hours. I’m pretty proud of them, and I think they look good next to the other casters.

This does of course now leave me with the task of completely painting all my Bution casters, and with only Vyros to do this should be easy. HOWEVER me and the missus are moving to a new house in a week or so, so all my paints have been packed away 😦 sad face. But keep checking back and I’ll have my Dawnlord ‘Samuel L Jackson’ Vyros done soon enough.

BTC – Horthol, Longrider Champion

May 8, 2010

So I’ve been slightly slacker like over the past couple of days, but last night I managed to finish my Horthol mounted model.

To put it bluntly, I’m not too happy with the way this came out. I think I went OTT with the weathering style effects on his armour. Plus the model seems to be one big mess of bronze. But it’s done now, and it’s certainly not bad, it’s just not enough to make me happy!

I present, Horthol:

Barbed Thorn Challenge – Day 1

May 3, 2010

Ok, day one of the challenge, and I’ve managed to paint my Warlock!

But before I present the model I want to talk about the reasons behind my paint scheme.

Now, as you’ll know from my previous post I decided to go with a grey scheme for the flesh, I decided normal grey for the trollkin, light grey for the pygmies, and dark grey for the Beasts. When it came to deciding on the clothing/armour, I wanted to portray Hoarluk’s ‘wild’ theme, i wanted the armour to look like old armour that had been used over the centuries, so I went with a bronze colour rather than a silver colour. I wanted the clothing to be dull, muted, leathers and dark natural colours. I originally went with a dark green colour for the tartan, but I suddenly realised that my trolls would then start to look suspiciously like Circle Orboros themed trolls, so I quickly changed to a dark blue colour with green stripes through it.

I’m quite pleased with the way Hoarluk’s staff came out, especially the runic glow on the stone on the end, something I think I will take on when I do Mulg (who is next btw). I’m also very pleased with the minor conversion of putting the Scroll in Hoarluk’s hand rather than on the base.

I like the model, and I’m really pleased with the paintjob, I’ll be eager to hear what you guys think, so please feel free to leave c+c. Don’t be afraid to leave negative comments aswell if you want.

Without further ado, I present Hoarluk Doomshaper:

Barbed Thorn Challenge – A Preamble

May 2, 2010

Yo! So tomorrow is the start of the Barbed Thorn Challenge, just a reminder of the list:

Hoarluk Doomshaper
Mulg the Ancient
Slag Troll
Fell Caller Hero
Kriel Stone Bearer and Stone scribes
Long riders
10 Pygmy Burrowers

So I’ve set myself a quick schedule, I’m going to spend today just finishing off the bases for the longriders and assembling the longriders, then the paint schedule goes like this:
1st week
Monday: Hoarluk
Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday: Mulg
Friday/Saturday/Sunday: Pygmies

2nd week
Monday: Horthol mounted
Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday: Longriders
Friday/Saturday/Sunday: Kriel stone bearer and stone scribes

3rd week:
Monday: Horthol unmounted
Tuesday/Wednesday: Fell Caller Hero
Thursday/Friday: Slag Troll

4th week is reserved for catching up if needed.

Now I don’t start work until next Monday, so this weeks tasks should be easy. If by any chance that I get finished by the 4th week then I’ll be using the fourth week to paint upto 50pts.

So the question now stands, how can I take this list to 50 points? I have some ideas already, but I’m curious as to what you guys think I should add in.

My Leaving Present

April 16, 2010

As some of you may or may not know, I move to Portsmouth on Sunday.

This Tuesday just passed I got together with the guys from the club and we all had a little drink. At which point our local PG’er (and i’m proud to say good friend of mine) gifted me this model as a going away present. I’m committed to getting it painted and finished before the start of the Challenge, here it is:

P.S don’t forget, keep submitting your lists to the Barbed Thorn challenge! Getting really excited now!!

18 points of damage to the Avatar? Wtf?

April 5, 2010

It’s late and I’m tired, I’ll do a proper write up tomorrow, but for now here’s a pic of my MHA alt sculpt finished…

So as you can see, I painted up my beautiful alt sculpt MHA, there are two reasons behind why I painted it up in this busy busy time of my life…
1. This model was very kindly gifted to me by our local press ganger (and fellow author Doctor Kog)
2. It did 18(!) fricking damage to the Avatar the other day! Hell yeah!!

So here’s my guide on how I painted this model. Bear in mind I used GW paints on this model, it’s easy to find alternatives for some of them, but a couple are slightly unique…

1: I sprayed the model black

2: I gave pretty much the whole model a base coat of Charadon granite

3: I then applied a very heavy Badab black wash

4: I re-hilighted some of the cloth (but not the straps) with Charadon granite

5: I then continued to highlight the cloth with Catachan green, using thin continuous layers.

6: I picked out all the areas that I wanted White, you can choose not to use White but I wanted to tie it into the rest of my army. I gave all these areas a base coat of Dheneb stone.

7: the dheneb stone then got a coat of space wolves grey, then layered 50/50 SWG and skull White, with a final layered highlight of skull White.

8: I painted all the skin Tallarn flesh, this is a mistake I made and I had to go back and touch up areas i’d done before. In hindsight I should have done the flesh before the cloth badab black wash.

9: I washed the skin with badab black, and the highlighted it (with very very thin watery layers) with the tallarn flesh. I then picked out the eyes with skull White and picked out the pupil with badab black.

10: I picked out the bags with scorched brown, and highlighted them with calthan brown.

11: the chain was painted with Chainmail, and washed with (again) badab black, the re-highlighted with chainmail again.

12: the hair was painted with 50/50 enchanted blue mix, then highlighted lightly with Ice blue, and a final highlight with Space wolves grey.

13: finally the glow was added to the chain with a 33/33/33 mix of snot green, hawk turquoise and p3 mixing medium.

And then I was done! You’ll notice the base isn’t completely finished, I’m thinking of putting a tutorial on how I do my bases pretty soon (it’s all thanks to Doc Kog again).
