Nationals List Discussion Part II: The List’s Revenge!

by

3 more days til UK nationals or masters or whatever it’s called! I’m getting pretty excited now, not just because I’ll be playing a crap load of Warmachine but also because me and “critical” Sam will be shacking up with Jase, the Guild’s very own prodigal son. Its an added bonus that I’ll get the chance to bring some righteous fire to the BTC Fail Kriel!

As promised, here are the 50pt armies I’ll be taking with me.

The first is the tried and tested Sev ‘jack bonanza:

Grand Scrutator Severius

Repenter

Repenter

Guardian

Templar

Vanquisher

Choir of Menoth (Leader and 5 Grunts)

Flameguard Cleansers (Leader and 5 Grunts)

Holy Zealots (Leader and 9 Grunts)

Holy Zealot Monolith Bearer

The Covenant of Menoth

The Wrack (3 wracks)

Vassal of Menoth

Vassal of Menoth

Check out the newly painted Templar

It hits hard. It dies slowly. And it deals with a lot of things that are thrown at it. Its good fun letting the Templar and the Guardian plough through heavy targets while the AoEs and sprays blow the chaff away. Also, being ‘jack heavy, its pretty handy at scenarios even though it’s kinda slow. Units can struggle to take objectives effectively because the entire unit needs to gather around whereas a ‘jack can wander up and sit on it. I’ve already talked about this list in the pre-masters write up so check out how it performed here:  http://barbedthorn.com/2010/05/23/winsford-pre-masters-mash-up/.

So there is my fat, stompy, heavy hitting, attrition jack army. Next we have the swift, infantry sweeping, assassination army lead by eFeora:

Feora, Protector of the Flame

Redeemer (bonded)

Reckoner

Vanquisher

Choir of Menoth (Leader and 3 Grunts)

Daughters of the Flame (Leader and 5 Grunts)

Exemplar Errants (Leader and 9 Grunts)

Exemplar Errant Officer & Standard Bearer

Temple Flameguard (Leader and 9 Grunts)

Temple Flameguard Officer & Standard

Reclaimer

The Covenant of Menoth

The Wrack (3 wracks)

Vassal of Menoth

eFeora, another new paint-job

Way back at Vap-attack I was playing a pretty similar army to this but it didn’t work out too well so it went on the back burner. eFeora seems to be considered by many as the top tier of Menoth casters (after brie flavoured Kreoss lists). I struggled to grasp her properly but I think its starting to click for me now.

One of her more powerful facets is her warjack bond which gives one of her ‘jacks auto-fire on it’s attacks. This invariably ends up on a Redeemer although people do argue that the Dervish or Templar make pretty good options for it.

Her trademark ability is Caustic Presence; fires in her control area do not go out! And as her feat relies on fires (Feora gains a focus point for each fire in her control area) you want as many fire causing attacks as possible. This means the Vanquisher always makes its way into the list after the bonded redeemer.  Her feat is a tricky one to pull off, pop it too soon and she will end up camping the focus (not strictly a bad thing), pop it too late and everything will have already burned to death! Pop it at the right moment and she is fueling a potent 14” threat assassination run. (charge 9 + 3 for fire step + 2 for reach) The third ‘jack in my list is a Reckoner. Feora’s escort spell gives her ‘jacks a 2” movement boost which really helps deliver the potent Protectorate ‘‘jacks. One of the reasons Feora confused me was because this is such a solid spell for melee ‘jacks while she is quite fond of the fire causing sprays and AoEs. The Reckoner came along because it is a solid ‘jack to begin with and has the biggest innate melee threat of any PoM ‘jack, why not push that a little bit further, under escort the Reckoner destroys at 12” away (shooting casters and dropping their def by 2 is a bonus too). Escort also turns Feora into an arm 19 tank. I played against Andy’s eCaine army yesterday and camping 3 focus Feora survived the eCaine shoot-you-repeatedly-in-the-face assassination run and only took 2 points of damage!

The Reckoner is the tank buster of the list. This brings up the lists weakness, hard targets. If the Reckoner goes down then my next best option are the Errants. Pow 11 weapon masters (under infuse) should do ok. If any ultra heavy Khador lists appear I’ll have to turn to Sev. I’m also not convinced that I can play this list fast enough, 12 minutes goes by quick with all the AoEs and infantry I’m bringing… we’ll see how that pans out.

This list’s strength lies in its speed. 2 AD units, one with spd 7 and one with ranged attacks will be harassing opponents early on. As will the spd 7 rng 16 Redeemer. Its speed will also help it to claim objectives and succeed in scenarios like capture the flag which the Sev list will be hopeless at. One issue it can have is juggling the AoEs and the AD units, Daughters don’t appreciate pow 8 blast damage. But if the AoEs are out of the question don’t underestimate the potency of a spd 7 Redeemer wielding its mace at close quarters:  pow 15 with the choirs battle hymn (eCaine felt the brunt of that yesterday) pow 17 if Feora whaps infuse on that shit.

This is first and foremost an infantry clearing list. I’ve gone down the fire road in a big way. Lets list the things that will set heathens on fire seen here: Feora’s flamethrower, the bonded Redeemer, the Vanquisher 4” AoE, TFG spears and with the assistance of the Covenant the Errants will be packing fire causing crossbows. Yesterday on turn 2 I’d set fire to a massive chunk of eCaines army (including the Squire and Madelyn Corbeau). Again, the Daughters clean up infantry and also make a pretty crazy tarpit/roadblock. I think this is a sound list with plenty of tricks up its sleeve, we’ll see how it goes eh?

So there it is, wish me luck and all the best to everybody going. My target is to win 3 of my 5 games and if I can grab best Menoth I’ll be over the moon. I’ve got my last essay of the year to do when I get back so the report may not appear for another week or so but rest assured, it will appear.
